Heritage Lottery funded Young Roots Project Crossing Borders, Music and Heritage

This project is a brand new and exciting partnership initiative between, Race Council Cymru (RCC), African Community Centre, Swansea Museum & Swansea YMCA.

The project managed by Ify Iwobi Musician /Composer, Gergo Daroczi music officer Swansea YMCA and Roselynn Mbwembwe lead dance coordinator, assisted by Richard Nkhata deputy dance coordinator to bring young BAME musicians and dancers (aged between 13 and 26) together to explore if and how their heritage influences their music/ composition and dance.

The team will be contracting Arnold Matsena an experienced dancer to teach large groups of dancers during the project. This young and vibrant team will capture the stories of young people and get them all to compose a few pieces and perform some contemporary dances at the Black History events 2018.

The project aims to support and encourage musicians to co-create some original compositions and for the dancers to choreograph and perform original dances over the next 15 months. Participants will discuss and digitally record their stories on the impact their heritage have on music and dance.

The project started on the 1st of March 2018. If you are a BAME young musician or dancer then please get in touch with Ify at [email protected] or Roselynn at [email protected] or Richard at [email protected]
