Celebrating Roma Taylor: A Lifetime of Service and Recognition

We are thrilled to announce that Mrs. Roma Taylor, the founder of Windrush Cymru Elders, has been honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Welsh Veterans Awards. This award recognises her remarkable contributions as a nurse in the British Army and her tireless community work.

Roma Taylor’s journey began in Antigua, where she was born in December 1943. At the age of 15, she moved to Cardiff, Wales, and quickly became an integral part of the community. Her early life was marked by her dedication to nursing, a passion that led her to join the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps, serving the Queen and country for 25 years.

During her military career, Roma worked in various countries, including Germany, Belgium, and France. Her commitment to nursing and the well-being of others extended beyond her military service. Upon retiring, she continued to serve her community through various charitable and community initiatives.

In 2017, Roma founded the Windrush Cymru Elders group with the support of Race Council Cymru. This group provides a vital lifeline for elders who migrated to Wales during the Windrush era, offering them a safe space for weekly meetings and cultural activities. Roma’s leadership and compassion have made a significant impact on the lives of many, ensuring that the contributions of the Windrush generation are recognized and celebrated.

Roma’s recent recognition at the Welsh Veterans Awards is a testament to her lifelong dedication to service. Her story is an inspiration to all, highlighting the importance of resilience, community, and the enduring legacy of the Windrush generation.
