Race Council Cymru announce funding available to support arts activities across Wales on the theme ‘Young People, the Time is Now!

Race Council Cymru (RCC), funded by Arts Council Wales have the opportunity to fund a series of Black History Wales 365 small arts development activities, that engage communities in new and innovative artistic practices or to explore new ideas and creative practice.

One of Black History Wales’s Founder’s, Humie Webbe is managing the project and is keen to receive applications from across the country. If you are interested in delivering an activity, you can apply for a maximum of £750 by emailing RCC to request an application form at: [email protected]. Activities can be online, indoors, or outdoors but must be completed by 31 May 2023. Your project must involve people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and you will also need to structure your proposal around the theme for the year, clearly outlining what you aim to deliver, who your participants will be and how the money will be allocated.

In 2020, RCC and the Black History Wales Management Committee led the campaign to move away from Black History Month Wales and deliver Black History Wales 365 as an all-year programme, with a new year’s title theme every year. The title for this year’s programme which runs from 1 October 2022 – 30 September 2023 is: ‘Young People, The Time is Now!’ and aims to celebrate young people and their interventions, achievements and contributions to Wales.

Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE FLSW, Founder and CEO of Race Council Cymru said:  “The theme of the year ‘Young People, the Time is Now!’ is a call to action for all young people to speak up about the contributions of Black people to society, to call out racist injustices, to challenge adults around them to be inclusive.

This is the year where society is encouraged to hear the voices of young people and recognise them as future generation leaders. Now is the time to listen to their voices, now is the time to work with young people to embed Black history in schools and society at large. NOW is the time to take a stand for justice, inclusion and equity.”

Black History Wales engages, educates and empowers individuals, community groups and Wales-wide communities in acknowledging and recognising the contributions that the African Diaspora has made in the history of Wales’ economic and cultural development. It also allows the wider community to take part, learn and celebrate together to promote understanding and share our global history.
