National Windrush Day

Windrush Day was introduced in June 2018 on the 70th anniversary of the Windrush migration. Since then, National Windrush Day has been celebrated across the country every year on 22 June, to celebrate the incredible contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to the UK.

Windrush Day 2023 – Preparations for the 75th Anniversary

Our Windrush Cymru lead, Chudi Emmanuel Okeh and Community Engagement Officer, Moomal Shah were delighted to attend the official launch of the ‘Windrush 75’ campaign at the Houses of Parliament this July. We look forward to supporting the call for Windrush Day 2023 to be a major national moment in our history and as take our Windrush Cymru Elders on the next steps in this marking this historic year ahead we invite everyone to join us. Let’s spread the word about this landmark day and let’s continue to grow as a nation.

National Windrush Day 2022

The Windrush Cymru Elders in partnership with the African Community Centre and Age Alive Newport marked Windrush Day, 22 June 2022 at the Wales Millennium Centre. The first of our Windrush Generation landed on our shores on this day 74 years ago and we mark this day every year to honour the legacy of each and every person and their descendants who accepted the invitation to come and help rebuild Britain. These invaluable contributions made within our communities are immeasurable and we continue to grow from them as they strengthen and shape the society we live in.

As we look towards the 75^th anniversary next year, let’s continue to listen to each other’s stories and to learn from each other.

National Windrush Day 2019

National Windrush Day 2019 event in the Pierhead Building, Cardiff Bay, sponsored by Jane Hutt AM, Deputy Minister and Chief Whip to celebrate the contributions made by the Windrush Generation and their descendants.

The event was hosted by Uzo Iwobi OBE, with speakers from Windrush Cymru Elders (their current sponsors representative from RWCMD), Black History Patrons, representatives of Betty Campbell MBE (daughter and granddaughter) plus an Empire Windrush soldier John Brock MBE, was programmed to speak but unfortunately was too unwell on the day to take part. The Traditional Ancestral Tribute was delivered by Cliff De Pass and presentations by Jane Hutt AM, Deputy Minister and Chief Whip, Vaughan Gething AM, Rt Hon Alun Michael JP, Judge Ray Singh CBE, Councillor Huw Thomas, Leader of Cardiff Council, Vinita Templeton, Director of Public and Immigration Law, Hilary Brown, Gaynor Legall, Chair of CHC, and Dr Adeola Dewis, Heritage Lead for the Windrush Heritage Project, Our Voices, Our Stories, Our History.

National Windrush Day 2018

Race Council Cymru and the Windrush Cymru Elders marked the 70th Anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in Wales at the Senedd and the Lord Mayor’s Reception Room in the Guildhall to acknowledge the contribution the Windrush generation has made to our country.

The leader of the House, Julie James, hosted the celebration as part of a week of events to mark Refugee Week, to commemorate Windrush Day and recognise its wide historic and present-day significance.
