Introduction and Background

Hello, I’m Natalia Kostyleva. Originally from Russia, I moved to Swansea with my family in 2022. I’m a professional artist and advertising specialist with a deep passion for art in various forms, including drawing, painting, and digital graphic design. I graduated with honours from Art College and South Ural State University in my hometown, where I studied for a total of 9.5 years. Even after completing my formal education, I continued to enhance my skills through various courses in social media promotion, graphic software, and website creation.

In 2010, my husband and I established a printing house, offering comprehensive services from design to final printed products. I also created and managed two websites, one for our printing house and another as a marketplace for car stickers. Since arriving in Swansea, I’ve been actively volunteering with Race Council Cymru (RCC) since September 2022, designing posters to advocate for racial equality and working to build a strong brand presence for RCC. I also volunteer for EYST, assisting with logo creation, website improvement, and providing interpreting services for Russian-speaking minorities.

Challenges Encountered

Some challenges I’ve faced include the lack of appropriate hardware and software for graphic design work due to high demand on PC resources. Additionally, there has been confusion regarding job role titles, as responsibilities in the UK can differ from those in Russia. As a representative of a different language and culture, I’ve encountered difficulties in accessing certain medical services and sometimes struggle with cultural nuances. However, the greatest challenge for many minorities is often loneliness, which can lead to feelings of depression.

Achievements and Contributions

I’ve participated in marches against racism in Cardiff in both March 2023 and March 2024. As an artist, I’ve showcased my work in several local art exhibitions, including those at MAD office, EYST office, Mission Gallery, and Glynn Vivian Gallery. These experiences have allowed me to contribute to the community both through advocacy and artistic expression.

Engagement with the Local Community

My engagement with the community is primarily through the posters and promotional materials I design. By creating visually impactful designs, I aim to attract people to various activities organised by RCC. My work in this area helps raise awareness and advocate for racial equality and inclusion.

Messages for the Community

To foster positive change, we should focus on raising our children in an internationally friendly environment, providing opportunities for them to interact and build friendships across cultures. This approach can help eliminate racism and other forms of discrimination in the future. Socialisation between minority communities and the general population is crucial for creating a more inclusive society.

Advice for Young People

My advice is simple: Be kind, be strong, and don’t be shy. Let your dreams come true and pursue them with confidence.
