Mrs Samsunear Ali

Treasurer

Samsunear has 25 years experience of working in the private, public and the voluntary sector. She is currently the Deputy CEO of BAWSO; the leading organisation in providing specialist services to BME Communities affected by Domestic Abuse and other forms of Violence Against Women.

Her work involves lobbying and campaigning on Violence Against Women’s issues. She represents BAWSO both locally and nationally. She has been involved in the campaign to find a long term solution for Women with no recourse to public funds. She played an active role in the review of the Supporting People Revenue Grant Funding Stream in both 2003 and 2014. She was part of the Culture and Communities Consultation in the Welsh Government. She has been part of the Welsh Governments Violence Against Women’s Working Group and the Forced Marriage Sub Group. She has been involved in the Modernising Agenda of the Domestic Abuse Services in Wales.

Samsunear’s passion is to support the most vulnerable and get the best out of people, hence she thrives in her community work. She was the Chair of Minority Ethnic Women’s Network (MEWN Cymru) and the Treasurer of Women in Action. She is currently the Treasurer of Bangladeshi Reference Group; Race Council Cymru; Amaanah learning 4 Kidz and HR/Governance Committee of Cardiff Muslim Primary School.

Samsunear has been involved with the Bangladeshi Reference Group from inception. She has been involved in the development of the group consistently. She brings to the group her expertise in Finance Management, Funding and Development and Governance, which are all a foundation of a successful group. She continues to vision innovative ways to sustain and further develop the group. The latest development of BRG is the Wales for Bangladesh Project.

The idea to develop Wales for Bangladesh came following the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh. As a result of the garments factory collapse many workers had died and many left unable to work. So far Wales for Bangladesh have fundraised to support the victims. Their vision is to look at the long term aspect of working conditions such as the health & safety of factories, working hours, minimum pay, harassment at work and child labour exploitation.

Samsunear is the winner of the 2011 Welsh Asian Women’s Achievement Award in the Leadership and Management category. In 2012 she stood for the Council Election in Cardiff.

Samsunear has been involved in fundraising initiatives; in 2012 she climbed Mount Snowdon the highest mountain in Wales, this year she participated in the Cardiff half marathon.

Samsunear’s achievements are a culmination of her hard work and commitment to her career. Samsunear is passionate about her work and her drive is the difference she makes to some of the most vulnerable women in society.
